Food Photography Workshop by Dinesh Khanna and Aditya Arya at Academy of Photography Excellence (APEX)

After recent Lightroom workshop http://phototravelings.blogspot.in/2012/04/third-lightroom-workshop-at-apex.html at APEX, I was excited about wonderful opportunity to attend Food Photography Workshop by Dinesh Khanna and Aditya Arya at APEX. Today (on 19th May 2012), one day workshop on Food Photography happened with some of the enthusiastic folks from different walks of life. This Photo Journey is trying to share the enviornment of the workshop, although it misses some of the aspects like interations, Lighting experiments, Food Stlying etc..APEX, Academy of Photography Excellence has a nice place in the basement which is usually used for these workshops. Today Dinesh and Aditya were ready with all the preparations at 11:00 am. Anjali, Food Stylist, was there to help them. It was more exciting to see all kitchen stuff on one side of the room and a table surrounded by different types of lights. One laptop was projected on front wall, which was mainly for showing slides or photographs being shot during the workshop. Apart from this one projector was installed on other wall to project live video of all things happening in the front - food styling, lighting etc. This video projection was important as noticing everything form our seats would have been impossible. But during later half of the workshop, most of us were very close to main area, so this video was not really required at that moment of time. Let's start that how the workshop started and what all happened during this.. After brief introduction of every participant and Instructors, Dinesh started talking about Food Photography in general and starting sharing specific details through slides. After some theorotical basis about Food Photography, general trends and practices he started showing some of the photographs hae had shot during his career. Above photograph shows projection of one of his photographsIt was amazing to hear about story around each food photograph and how it was shot. He told about different types of food items, their colors and texture etc. At the same time he talked about various challenges in food photography and how usually Food Photographers handle them. It was interesting to hear some of their own case-studies After Dinesh, Aditya showed his Food Photographs with different style and it was great to see two different kinds of shots & thoughts. This was something very interesting, which lead to some healthy discussions about shooting practices in studios or kitchens etc. After looking at photographs of Dinesh adn Aditya, we broke for lunch and second half was completely about actual shooting with different types of food items, various lighting equipments etc. Dinesh moved step by step and intially talked about ambient light which can be a great source of shooting and explained about scenarios when it's difficult to reply on ambient light only. He started with one light without any defusing element on it and explained about the problems we need to overcome. He gradually added other lighting elements like defuser, reflector and mirrors etc. He was using Lightroom Tethering to project shot photographs immediately for reviewThere were some good discussions about lighting angles, placements of different objects etc. In above photograph Dinesh is reviewing the recently shot photograph on projector. This is the moment when everyone used to look at the photograph and discuss various options to further improve it. Dinesh used different combinations of various lights but didn't use flash initially and then same setup was shot by Aditya in his style & using flash Aditya was using Mamiya Leaf and this was first time I was seeing this camera outside the LCD screens :) . He was using Leaf Capture for tethering and showing shot photograph on projector. During these shoots we also talked about the forms of food usually used for photography and how different types of props can make a photograph greatDifferent types of food items were shot during this workshop and Anjali was amazingly efficient is doing her styling work. Knowing the critical role of a Food-Stylish was something new for me. I think I missed the part where Anjali also talked about the right places and processes to buy stuff for Food Photography.Between the shots, Anjali needed to chip in for improving the styling as per suggestions from participants and Dinesh/Aditya. It was interesting to see huge difference in photographs by some small styling tricks.During the end of the workshop, some of the folks tried their hands on this setup and clicked some photographs. Overall it was great workshop on Food Photography, through which we also got to know about lighting processes while photographing at home or a studio.

Aditya was using Mamiya Leaf and this was first time live in front of me . He was using Leaf Capture for tethering and showing shot photograph on projector. During these shoots we also talked about the forms of food usually used for photography and how different types of props can make a photograph great.
